How to link a webform element to a database?

Hi,

Is there any way to link a webform element to a database (eg. CERN phonebook or an Excel list of 100+ institutes), i.e. when the person types in his name in the webform field, the name and office number are inserted automatically/institute name autocompletes so that the person does not need to type in all the information manually?

The only way I can think of is if to write a custom module.
