Since the deprecation of simpleSAMLphp it’s unclear to me how I can map a role to an e-group. I undestood that OpenID Connect is now used but I don’t get from the configuration at /admin/config/services/openid-connect how I am supposed to do the mapping.
Are there instructions avialable somewhere ?

As noted in my e-mail, we have moved to OpenID following the transition to the new infrastructure in November 2021. Accordingly, roles and access is now managed via the dedicated Application Portal (see https://application-portal.web.cern.ch/) using Grappa and/or traditional e-groups. We have some preliminary documentation on this at https://drupal.docs.cern.ch/roles-and-permissions.
